Pastor's Column
Sunday we have a called congregational meeting to act on a report from the Officer Nominating Committee. In truth, it is generally a short meeting after worship (it will only delay our cookie eating and fellowship by a couple of minutes!). I once moderated a similar meeting with seventeen members voting for two ruling elders, and we had to have a ballot vote because someone was nominated from the floor in addition to the two presented by the nominating committee. Believe me, we ministers like the short, boring meetings. But do not miss that these meetings to elect officers reflect one of our core values as Presbyterians - elected leadership from the congregation to lead the congregation. As you vote for officers this Sunday, you will affirm the work of the Officer Nominating Committee, which prayerfully sought to find those whom God is calling into leadership at this particular time, and you will affirm those potential officers who have prayerfully considered whether they believe this is the time for them to serve. This process is also a reminder to each of us that God is calling us to particular tasks at particular times in our lives. What do you hear God calling you to do at this time in your life?

Yours in Christ,

Richard

Kirsten currently moderates the Adult Faith Formation Committee at St. Andrew and co-leads Theology on Tap with Richard Sale. He is serving a three year term on the Men's Council at Mo-Ranch. Randy and Beth's pew of choice is the one on the pulpit side behind Lynn Carrico and in front of the Tolle's and Linda Steger  - about row seven.  Randy is looking forward to serving God, St. Andrew and the community as a deacon.

Leon Harp: Leon was born in 1935 in a somewhat strict Christian family who raised him and his older brother, on an irrigated cotton farm north of Abernathy, Texas, just north of Lubbock. He joined the Abernathy First Baptist Church and was baptized when he was only 11 or 12.  The day he graduated from Texas Tech University, he received his first draft notice. He was inducted into the army and served his two years active duty in the Core of Engineers at the Presidio of San Francisco as a map and model maker.  While there, he joined a Presbyterian Church near the post and attended services there most Sundays.  After being discharged from active service, he stayed on in California and worked at his first job in an architect's office in San Francisco.  Then, when it was time for him to return closer to home, he moved to Dallas where he joined Highland Park Presbyterian Church and was a member for all the years that he lived and worked in the Dallas area (including the years he lived in South Ridge in Denton).  Leon was married twice. He was first married to Nelda for 25 years and then later to Sarah for 31 years. Both wives died of cancer. When he retired from being an active architect (after 50 years), he moved to Plano where he lived for about 5 years before his wife, Sarah, died.  He attended Sunday School at Christ United Methodist in Plano during that time. After Sarah died, Leon moved back to Denton where his daughter and her husband live. Leon loves the music and enjoys the services at St. Andrew.

Katie Brindle:  Katie Brindle is an Aubrey high school junior, baptized and raised at St. Andrew.  She is the daughter of Joey and Tara Brindle and sister to Claire. She often sits toward the front of the Sanctuary on the right.  Katie is active both in the St. Andrew youth group and Westminster choir, and plays in the varsity drum line at school.  Katie is looking forward to serving as a new Deacon.

Natalie Green:  Natalie Green is wife to Keith; mother to Allison, 7, and Jacob, 20 mos. She's been a member of St. Andrew for 11 years. You can find her perched on the front row in the balcony. She serves at St. Andrew in Children's Ministry and Handbell Choir.

Chris Fair:  Chris was introduced to the Presbyterian church by his wife, Amy. He was baptized at Trinity Presbyterian in Flower Mound and married Amy there in 2009. As member there, he was active with sponsoring youth group activities and taught Senior High and Junior High Sunday School. The Fairs joined St. Andrew in April 2017. Chris enjoys hanging out with the youth at Super Wednesday, is an active participant in the Not Your Average Presbyterian Sunday school class, and is a proud member of the Balcony Peeps for Sunday morning worship. In addition to serving as a Deacon, he will also be serving on the Board of The Children's Place preschool as a parent and St. Andrew member representative. Chris' son David, 21, is currently serving in the U.S. Army while Emily, 3, and Chase, 18 months, keep him busy at home.

Mary Taylor: This December, Rick and I will be married 47 years.  Our daughter Jamie and her husband Rob have two children, Kate, 11, and Charlie (8).  They reside in Dublin, Ohio.  We are fairly new to St. Andrew, coming here from Ohio in October of 2016.  We came to Texas to break out of the snow belt.  This also brings Fran Taylor, my mother-in-law and us closer to her sister, Barbara Brunelle and family.  You will find Fran, Barb and I seated in the last pew middle aisle.  It might interesting to know we had the same seating arrangement at Worthington Presbyterian in Ohio.
Flu Shot Clinic
Sunday, October 20
Free flu vaccines are given to our congregation by Texas Health. The clinic will be held on Sunday, October 20, 2019 from 9:30am-12:00pm in the Parlor.
Super Wednesday
Mission in Context
On October 9 we heard from several agencies that assist clients in Denton with housing needs. Two agencies provide temporary shelter for the homeless, while another helps clients make the transition to more permanent housing. Yet another helps keep senior citizens from becoming homeless. Transitional housing is a big need for homeless clients in Denton. On October 16 we heard from agencies that promote health issues and offer health-related services to citizens in need of those services.  On October 23 the group will hear from agencies who address the issues of hunger in the Denton area.
Volunteers Needed for Day of the Dead Festival
Saturday, October 26
St. Andrew will be participating again this year in Denton's Day of the Dead Festival on Saturday, October 26. This is a free multicultural family-friendly festival for families in Denton, Texas. You can join a team representing St. Andrew at the festival in one of three ways:
  1. Help staff the Children's booth in 2 hour time slots. Volunteers are asked to have an inviting smile, hand out candy, and help kids as they color a trick or treat bag or mask.
  2. Volunteers are needed for two hour shifts for Texas Presbyterian Hospital Community's Flu clinic. Volunteers will share smiles and give directions as participants fill out paperwork for flu shot consent forms.
  3. Our team is already working on St. Andrew's entry in the coffin push derby! Come cheer our team at the Hickory Street Races, which start around noon and run until 4:00pm.
If you would like to volunteer contact Terah Hatter through St. Andrew Connect or email at terahdoc@gmail.com or see her in the narthex after services or during meals on Super Wednesday. You'll enjoy it right down to your bones.

Give-a-Meal-a-Month
September Results
Thanks to everyone who contributed to Give-a-Meal-a-Month in September. The congregation and Circle #1 donated $212.43. With our donation of 46 pounds of food, we were able to feed 94 people for a week. So far this year, we have fed 1,205 people for a week which surpasses the total number of people we fed in 2018. Remember, just $2.29 or 54 pounds of food feeds one person for a week. Thank you for supporting this Diaconate outreach program that helps feed those in need.
Halloween Candy Fun Fact #1: Why is bubble gum pink? When it was invented, pink was the only food dye on hand.
Halloween Candy Fun Fact #2: During World War II, Tootsie Rolls were added to soldiers' rations because of their durability in all weather conditions.
Halloween Candy Fun Fact #3: Milky Way bars weren't named after their home galaxy. The name comes from a type of malted milkshake that was popular in the early 1920s.
October Give-a-Meal - $2.29
A monetary donation of $2.29 feeds a person in need for a week. Donations can be made in your weekly offering, online, or in the church office.  Please write Give-a-Meal-a-Month on the envelope or check. If you would prefer to purchase food, suggested items are:
