Pastor's Column
As we have worked our way through Paul's letters to the Galatians and the Colossians this summer, I have been reminded of how the letters to the early church often focus on personal behavior (admittedly, Paul always has the community, not just the personal in mind). In some ways, the focus on behavior seems odd given that the resurrection of Jesus reshaped the trajectory of all creation. In some ways, it seems trivial to move from resurrection to dos and don'ts of how to live. But, consider the context of these early church communities. The Romans controlled the world in the which the Christians lived, and the early Christians were viewed as a minority group of a minority group. What little status the Jewish community had in the Roman world was not conferred on the Christian groups. The early Christians had very little, if any power in the world. In a world in which they could not vote according to their Christian beliefs or impose their beliefs on others (in fact, the Romans were all about imposing their will on Christians and others), the only aspect of their lives over which they had control was how they acted. Thus, a "new creation" in Christ could not transform her or his community or region through political power, but he or she could treat others in ways that reflected their calling as new creation. When I hear people lament (or think it myself) that there is nothing they can do because all the power is vested in those "others," I am reminded of these early Christians. Even as we work to transform the world from a leadership level, we are reminded of the importance of how we treat others and live in community, all of which show forth our calling as "new creations."

Yours in Christ,

Richard

Give-a-Meal-a-Month
July Results
Thanks to everyone who contributed to Give-a-Meal-a-Month in July. The congregation donated $220.00, and along with our donation of 15 pounds of food, we were able to feed 96 people for a week. So far this year, we have fed 962 people for a week.  Remember, just $2.29 or 54 pounds of food feeds one person for a week.  Thank you for supporting this Diaconate outreach program that helps feed those in need.
Food Fact #1: Unless the package says prewashed, always rinse produce with water and dry with a clean towel. Wash right before using to prevent bacteria from growing.
Food Fact #2: Stretchy plastic wrap can be used in your microwave if it doesn't touch the food and you poke ventilation holes in it.
Food Fact #3: Can you eat moldy cheese?  If the cheese is a hard cheese like Cheddar, Parmesan, and provolone, you can cut off the mold with a one-inch border and eat the unblemished portion. Soft cheeses such as cream cheese and Brie need to be thrown out when moldy.
August Give-a-Meal - $2.29
A monetary donation of $2.29 feeds a person in need for a week. Donations can be made in your weekly offering, online, or in the church office.  Please write Give-a-Meal-a-Month on the envelope or check. If you would prefer to purchase food, suggested items are:
Macaroni and Cheese, Tuna, Canned Black Eyed Peas, Canned Fruit
Optional: Cooking Oil or Coffee
Please return your non-perishable donations for the Denton Community Food Center to the collection bin in the hallway near Fellowship Hall. Thank You!
