The Shield | St. Andrew Presbyterian Church
Youth Column

This Sunday, May 19, plan to wear your comfortable clothes, eat some great food, and continue to live out the promise made when you heard the words, "Who stands with this child?" Two very exciting events in the life of St. Andrew are happening on this one day and you will not want to miss them!
During the worship service, we will recognize our high school seniors. This year we have 10 seniors, some of whom you have watched grow up at St. Andrew and others who have joined us more recently as active members of the youth group. During the worship service, many of these seniors will speak about what growing up at St. Andrew has meant to them, special memories, special people who have guided them along the way, their continuing faith journeys, and their plans to carry how St. Andrew has shaped them out into the world in the near future. In the last few months, we as a congregation have been blessed to witness several baptisms, and have often been reminded of the commitment we make to infants to stand with them throughout their lives. On Senior Sunday we continue to honor and live that vow, sending our seniors out from this congregation and into the next phase of their journey.
After the worship service, come to Fellowship Hall for the annual Youth BBQ and Baked Goods Auction. This always fun event is the youth group's main fundraiser of the year, providing funds beyond what is budgeted for special projects or activities. The BBQ is once again being prepared by pit master extraordinaire Joe Fritz. Join us for a great lunch of BBQ and all the sides. Donations will be accepted at the door. Following the meal, special baked goods provided by members of the congregation will be auctioned to the highest bidder. Promised goodies include Amy Cole's Ezekiel bread, peanut butter balls by J Konkle, Karen Laney's banana pudding, a Fungosa special baked by cabin cook Laurel Fritz, and much more. (If you are providing an item for the auction, please bring it to Fellowship Hall Sunday morning, 9:15-10:15.) A bake sale will also be available, and the senior slide show, always entertaining and often emotional, will be playing throughout the BBQ.
Both of these events are exciting and meaningful moments in the life of our congregation. The youth group looks forward to seeing you there!

Stephanie

Heard in the hallway:  "I have my dessert selection for the auction (ok, my wife is making it); I am ready to hear the Seniors share their stories in worship.  Can't wait to be there Sunday for worship and the Youth barbecue!"  Richard B. Culp

Russell Clark Recovery Fund
You probably know Russell Clark. He works with Liz Whitaker to fill our Super Wednesday table with great food. You may also know Russell as a custodian, helping St. Andrew to run efficiently when Shim and Harold aren't around. There's one other sure way to know Russell--from his laugh, which brightens every environment where he works.
Russell has been out of work since March 28 and is expected to be out at least another month due to medical issues. You can help. A GoFundMe has been started to help Russell with loss of income, medical bills, and additional living needs. Donate here.

Give-a-Meal-a-Month
April Results
April was another great month of giving! The congregation donated $235 and 10 pounds of food. Remember, just $2.29 or 54 pounds of food feeds one person for a week. Thank you for supporting this Diaconate outreach program that helps feed those in need.
  • Food Fact #1: If you regularly throw away stale chips/cereal/crackers/etc., try storing them in airtight containers-- this should help them keep longer (or just buy fewer of these products).
  • Food Fact #2: When cooking, use every piece of whatever food you're cooking with, whenever possible. For example, leave the skin on cucumbers and potatoes, and sauté broccoli stems along with the florets. Skins and stems often provide additional nutrients for our bodies.
  • Food Fact #3: Monitor what you throw away. Designate a week in which you write down everything you throw out on a regular basis. Tossing half a loaf of bread each week? Maybe it's time to start freezing half that loaf the moment you buy it so it doesn't get stale before you're able to eat it.
May Give-a-Meal - $2.29
A monetary donation of $2.29 feeds a person in need for a week. Donations can be made in your weekly offering, online, or in the church office.  Please write Give-a-Meal-a-Month on the envelope or check. If you would prefer to purchase food, suggested items are:
Spaghetti and Canned Sauce, Canned Peas, Canned Pears
Optional: Cooking Oil, Baby Food
Please return your non-perishable donations for the Denton Community Food Center to the collection bin in the hallway near Fellowship Hall. Thank You!
