The Shield | St. Andrew Presbyterian Church
Youth Column

This Sunday we will be led in worship by 37 of our teenage youth. Youth Sunday is always a special time for our church; for the youth who lead us in worship and for the congregation to be led by teenagers who dedicate much of their time and lives to the life of the church at St. Andrew and in the community beyond. When we prepare for Youth Sunday, the youth help pick music and a theme or topic for the Sunday. We build the service together through their choices and experiences.

There is no doubt in my mind that being a teenager is harder today than ever before. These young teenagers are spread thin, pressured by academic rigors, expectations of life decisions at a young age and everything in their world is connected to social media, the good and the bad. The world they are living in is a difficult one, with many demands, but our youth show up week in and week out to come to Sunday school, worship and Super Wednesday. They bring so much joy, life, energy, questions and deep thought to my life each week and to each other's lives. We have a deeply dedicated, compassionate and loving group of teenagers in our church family.

I am so excited for the youth to be able to share in worship with you this Sunday. They have worked very hard, in spite of some scheduling difficulties this year. They are ready to share their gifts of music, liturgy and drama as they lead us all in worshiping our Lord. Come worship with us this Sunday and be reminded how special you are to be created by our Wonderful Maker!

The Children's Place Annual Fundraiser
Thursday, February 22
As many of you are aware, the Children's Place is a nonprofit preschool here at St. Andrew. Our school serves approximately 100 children (ages 1-6 years) in our loving, Christian, child-centered enrichment program.  In addition to keeping costs low for our families, we have a long history of providing scholarships to families who demonstrate financial need.  Since we are a nonprofit organization, we face a special challenge to replace and upgrade equipment and materials and make up for any deficits in our annual operating budget.  Our annual silent auction, held in conjunction with a dinner, is the primary fundraiser that supports this effort. We appreciate any monetary donation/sponsorship, a product, service or gift certificate for the upcoming fundraiser.  If you are able to donate to our organization, please contact Sara Armstrong at 940-453-7046, or the school director, Brenna Newman, at 940-367-7716.  Mark your calendars and plan on attending the dinner and auction as well! February 22 at 5:30pm in Fellowship Hall.

Lenten Prayer Class
February 28-March 28,
Chancel Area of Sanctuary (February 28-March 28)
Bekah Barnett and Lisa Patterson
Do you desire to pray with greater frequency, creativity, and with a deepening sense of connection between you and God? Come and join a group who seeks to grow in deeper relationship to God and, in the process, with one another. Bekah and Lisa do not have a magic formula for prayer, but we will learn and practice ancient disciplines as well as explore contemporary ones in order to encourage our Lenten practice of walking the path of discipleship guided by Jesus and following in his way. Questions? Contact Bekah Barnett, michaelandbekah@yahoo.com or Lisa Patterson,  lisa@saint-andrew.com.

An Update from Laurie LaMonica

Dear St. Andrew,

I've been working closely with the senior citizens and children of chinook. Apparently Lacy and I (she's the other YAV) have done such an amazing job we got asked to go down with the Alliance church(from chinook) to go to Mexico with them for a week and help spread the word.

I'm currently in the first phase of continuing a second year with the YAV program ( setting up interviews). Y'all have made it possible to help me find my passion and in doing so after I complete a second year I will be applying to Austin seminary to become a youth director in the Presbytery.

I'd like to reiterate that none of this would have been remotely possible with out every single one of you. I've been so blessed to have this amazing support system not only personally but also with my faith. In going to these other churches I've realized that our church community is seriously on a whole nether level. We aren't just a community we are a family. I really can't thank you enough!

I'll be sending another update when I find out a bit more from the program. I do have a blog if y'all would like to just hear what I've been up to it's
