The Shield | St. Andrew Presbyterian Church
Youth Director Column
At the corner of my elementary school property, in Odessa, Texas, was a small building called the "Rainbow Room". The Rainbow Room, still in existence today, is run by the local Department of Child Protective Services and is a place for people to go if they find themselves in domestic violence or foster situations that cause them to leave their lives behind in a hurry or with limited belongings. As a child, throughout the school year, and especially at Christmastime, our classes would hold donation drives to stock the Rainbow Room with jackets, socks, underwear, toothbrushes and toiletries, daily clothing and more. We would collect items then walk to the building at the corner to deliver the goods. Five years after I left my elementary school to move on to jr. high and then into high school, I once again found myself standing in the Rainbow Room. However, this time, I was the one in need of the items. I had recently been placed into foster care and had only the clothes I had worn to school the day I was removed from my childhood home. It was a bittersweet moment of gratitude and unbelief, but mostly gratitude, knowing the love of young kids and the spirit of giving instilled by a school community that had the ability to help me out.

This congregation instills, lives and believes in an attitude of giving, and not just at Christmastime. In this season, there are opportunities to help others through the angel trees that support both the Goodland Academy and the students at the Treehouse, and through the youth group's toy fundraising project. There is love and support given to those in our own community who are homebound and unable to join in festivities and services at the church. Meals are cooked, gifts are bought, songs are sung, communion is offered and through all of it, love is given. St. Andrew is good at giving love.

In Sunday's sermon, Richard preached about the possibilities of Advent, and how in this season we find ourselves on the cusp of new possibilities. The church year has begun anew and the calendar year is soon to follow, but first, we live into the possibilities that we know are in front of us, the giving and the loving, and we pray and look ahead that in this new season and new year, we might be able to open ourselves up to whatever possibilities may lie ahead. For your giving I say, thank you, though you may remain anonymous to some or the enormity of your giving may not be felt for years, the possibilities your gifts provide may influence the recipients in ways even they may not recognize or understand for years to come. The possibilities of your gifts are immeasurable. May you find joy this Advent season as you search for the new possibilities that may be opening up in your own life and in our lives together as a congregation.

May the Peace of Christ be with you,
Brandi Caldwell

Parents' Night Out
Saturday, December 9
Parents' Night Out (PNO) is a program for the young families of St. Andrew. The program has a two-fold purpose: it gives parents an opportunity to spend quality time together without their children and it gives the children an evening of fun, age-appropriate activities with their friends at St. Andrew. The evening runs from 4:00pm-8:00pm for infants-3 year olds in the Nursery. In the Rec. Center, 4 year olds-elementary age will meet from 4:00pm-9:00pm. We ask parents to make reservations no later than Thursday, the week of PNO. Please email Ms. Sue at: toddlerqueen2@gmail.com, or call 940-300-9262, for reservations.

Parking issues?
If you had trouble finding a parking spot due to the lot across Bolivar Street being closed for an upgrade, you might try to find spots in the following places: on the southwest side of the church is additional church parking that can be accessed from the alley that runs between McKinney St. and Oak St.; on the northeast corner of McKinney and Bolivar streets is the Daybreak parking lot; and the Frontier parking lot across Oak St. from the church (they do not officially allow parking, but they have not towed cars on Sunday morning). As always, if mobility comes easily to you, please park further away and walk so that those for whom mobility is an issue can find spots closer to the church.

Birthday Endowment Fund
This endowment was established in 2007 and provides income to fund mission efforts not covered by the annual mission budget. Income has been used in previous years to send children and sponsors to Mo-Ranch's Worship and Music Conference, as well as for mission projects such as water filtration systems for people in Guatemala. Traditionally, members contribute an amount equal to the number of years being celebrated. So on your next birthday remember this endowment and contribute toward making a lasting difference in the lives of others.
Give a Meal a Month
October-November 2017
In October and November, our congregation and Circle #1 donated $151.00 to the Food Center. The 176 pounds of food collected in October and November is the largest two-month total for 2017. Since January, we've given 696 pounds of food and have donated a total of $1,256.00. Thank you to everyone who made a food contribution!
Remember, a contribution of $10 buys $70-$80 worth of food. Please help those in need this holiday season with a monetary contribution to our Give a Meal a Month program.
Food Fact #1: Since the Denton Community Food Center buys 65% of their food from the Tarrant Area Food Bank, $2.29 feeds one person for 5-7 days.
Food Fact #2: Last year, the Denton Community Food Center served almost 4000 different families.
Food Fact #3: In 2016, approximately $90,000 worth of groceries was distributed by the Denton Community Food Center.
