The Shield | St. Andrew Presbyterian Church
Pastor's Column
Last week, Gayle Strange and I had the opportunity to attend the worship service and grand opening of the John and Sue McCoy House at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary (the program is on the bulletin board in the hallway outside the office). As many of you remember, Dr. McCoy served as the Sr. Minister at St. Andrew from 1976 - 1982. We enjoyed seeing many members of the McCoy family and listening as Sue addressed the gathered crowd. John and Sue lived in a married housing building that would be the single-adult housing building by the time I arrived at seminary; it has now been totally replaced by The McCoy House, with many apartments for families.
As I marveled at the changes to seminary housing, I was reminded of how differently the world and church seem today compared to when I was in seminary in the late 1980s/early 1990s. Seminaries are training clergy to be more entrepreneurial, more tech-savvy (I did not even have a computer in seminary), and more nimble because the church faces new demands and challenges in our world today. I also was reminded of a thing that transcends time-the excitement in the voices and eyes of first year students, who are full of desire to learn and follow Christ into the world.
The giving of many, including some of us from St. Andrew, supports the future leaders of the church by providing housing. As the world changes, God continues to equip us for the challenge of serving as the body of Christ in the world.

Yours in Christ,

Richard
Need Help Signing Up on St. Andrew Connect?
St. Andrew Connect is a new way for the church to better serve its members. Using St. Andrew Connect, we can share information between groups (committees, Sunday School classes, Youth Group, etc.) more easily. Members can also update their contact information and set up online giving themselves. There is also a mobile app so that you can take this information on the go!
We are inviting you to St. Andrew Connect so that you can update your information. We will use that information for our new printed membership directory.
Look for volunteers in the Narthex for the next few Sundays between Sunday School and the church service, as well as after the service. Volunteers will also be available from 5-5:30pm at Advent Adventure, November 29.

Last Opportunity to Sign Up for the March 2018 Israel Tour
November 22 is the final day to book a place on the St. Andrew Presbyterian Church tour to Israel, March 10-18, 2018.  Tour brochures, which include application forms, are on a table in the narthex.  Because the group will be departing from and returning to Houston rather than DFW, the basic tour price includes a complementary charter coach transfer between the church to and from Houston Intercontinental airport.   The trip is open to members of the St. Andrew congregation as well as their family members and friends.  If you have questions, contact Jim Goodnow at jdgoodnow@gmail.com.
Church Office Closed for Thanksgiving
The church office will be closed in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, November 23 and Friday, November 24. The church office will resume regular office hours on Monday, November 27.

Market for Mission
Sunday, December 3
Fellowship Hall, 9am-10:30am
The annual Market for Mission, sponsored by the St. Andrew Mission Committee, will be held on Sunday morning, December 3. There will be SERRV crafts with gifts costing $25 and under, including Christmas decorations and nativity sets. They are made by artisans from around the globe. SERRV enables them to receive fair market prices for their hard work, helping to reduce poverty in developing countries. Church groups as well as St Andrew Mission Partners will also be represented. They will be selling goods to raise money for their projects and will have information available. A continental breakfast will be served starting at 9 AM. Come shop the Market for your Christmas gift giving this year. See you there.
Denton Historic Home Tours
As partners in the Denton Main Street Association, join us in reaching out beyond St. Andrew's walls into the community at Denton's Historic Holiday Home Tours!  Organizer Randy Hunt is again looking for docents to assist during the Home Tours on Saturday, December 2, from 1:00pm until 5:00pm.  There is also a welcome party on December 1, from 7:00pm until 9:00pm (after the Lighting Festival) at Randy's beautiful Oak Street home, when we can enjoy refreshments and preview the lovely homes.  Serving as a docent simply means offering the hosts assistance in greeting guests, and all of us who assisted last year thoroughly enjoyed it!  Tickets to view the homes are also available. For more information and to sign up, contact Judy Stoughton at 940-383-2682 or at candjstoughton@aol.com.
City Parking Lot Closing
The city parking lot located across Bolivar street is closing to be improved. It is scheduled to be reopened April 29, 2018. Improvements include 86 parking spaces, four additional handicap spaces, and security lighting.

Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, the deadline for items to the November 23 edition of The Shield and the November 26 bulletin are due by 11pm on Monday, November 20.
