In the past few days, I
have been reminded in very powerful ways of the
diversity of God's people and the diverse ways
we are called to serve God in the world. Our
World Communion worship service highlighted nine
different languages (Arabic, Farsi, Lamkang,
English, Spanish, French, Russian, Twi, and
Dutch) along with bread from the countries
represented by those languages-an audible and
visual feast from the diversity of God's
creation. As I listened and watched, I was
struck by two things:
1) The people sharing their
gift of language were all connected to St.
Andrew, which means we have that diversity
running through us. 2) We could have had other
people representing additional languages, which
means the diversity displayed is not the sum
total of our diversity, but a window into our
diverse community of faith. Wow!
Then, I attended the Mission Mixer held by our
Mission committee, and I heard different groups
we support in our community share about their
mission work. From court-appointed guardians for
children in difficult circumstances to groups
dealing with homelessness to those providing
food assistance to those dealing with issues of
low income homeowners to medical clinics to
helping people with immigration issues to
assisting those who have suffered domestic
violence, St. Andrew supports many different
groups doing ministry in our community. As I
listened to the needs and ways in which those
needs are being met, I was overwhelmed at how
many different kinds of needs we have in Denton
County and at how many different people work to
meet those needs. As I drove home reflecting on
the past few days of ministry in your midst, it
occurred to me that God gives us such a diverse
community of faith because God is sending us
into a world with many, varied needs. All of us
and all our gifts are given by God and needed to
be used by God in ministry in our world. Thanks
be to God!

Giving
Is Simple
As we prepare for our
upcoming stewardship Commitment Sunday on
October 15, we ask that you begin to reflect on
our call as Christians to give back to God out
of the ongoing abundance we receive. Along with
the commitment to give, another question to
consider is "How can I/we give?"
The answer is
simple and straightforward-here are some of the
ways in which our members give.
- Many of us write a check, either
weekly or monthly, while others write just one
check annually.
- Some of us give online through our
church's website: http://www.saint-andrew.com/.
If you're interested in giving online, the
secure link to PayPal is under the GIVE ONLINE
tab at the top of our home page. Once on the
secure page, you can give by either credit or
debit card.
- Finally, some in our congregation give
by automatic bank draft. Giving in this way
means that after you set the process up with
your financial institution, they will send the
amount of your choice automatically to the
church each month.
Giving is simple and
straightforward. We encourage you to join us in
our mission to serve God by giving
joyfully.

We will have the privilege of
hearing from the Rev. Dr. John M. Buchanan this

Sunday morning we will gather
in Fellowship Hall at 9:15 for a light

the legacy of the Reformation in the 21st
Century. The Rev. Buchanan will preach on our
reforming impulses as Presbyterians during the

Gathering
of the Clans #3
Why Do We
Celebrate the Kirkin' O' Th' Tartans?
The
tartan is a symbol of this love and
togetherness, no matter what our heritage. In
our Kirkin' service, we remember ancient times,
as well as past and present kith and kin, while
asking God's help and blessings in the future.
We celebrate clans and tartans because the
clansmen demonstrated true brotherhood and the
clan was the family. In early history, clans
were simply a gathering of peoples for their
protection and for economic, political and
social support. They were not necessarily
related by blood. Scotland in the mid-18th
century saw the English parliament and monarchy
(The Disarming Act, 1746 - 1782) banning
weapons, as well as the wearing of tartan or
kilts by Highland clansmen (effective August
1747). A latter-day legend has it that clansmen
would carry small pieces of the banned tartan
cloth to the Church (Kirk) and the clergymen
would slip a blessing into the service. Specific
tartans developed simply because each area liked
to weave a certain design using local herb dyes.
As a remembrance of early Scottish
Presbyterianism, Kirkin' o' th' Tartan worship
services have spread across America.
If you
would like to carry a flag in the
Kirkin' procession, please sign up at the
Kirkin' table in the Narthex. If you have
a clan preference (or not), we'd like to know
that, too. Also, we will have
children's flags as well, so your child may
volunteer to carry a
flag.

Sacraments
Workshop Recap
This year we had six
children attend the two-week sacraments workshop
class, along with their parents. Taught by Amy
and Michael Ball, the children learned about the
two sacraments in the Presbyterian Church
(U.S.A.) - baptism and the Lord's Supper. The
classes are hands-on and age appropriate and
after completing the two weeks, the children
served in worship on World Communion Sunday.
They carried in the elements for the Lord's
Supper which included breads from India, Iran,
Russia, France, Jordan, Mexico, Ghana, and
Belgium. The children who participated in the
class were: Rhys Blosser, Cici Chavira,
Elizabeth Gibson, Allison Green, Tristan
Hoffmann and Connor Hoffmann.

Ministry Services Provided to Members
As deacons, we strive to take care
of our Home Ministry members. We make sure they
have monthly communion served to them, visits,
receive get well, birthday and special occasion
cards. With some of our members, phone calls are
appropriate. Many enjoy being read to or playing
games.
Each Sunday the Chancel flowers are
divided into several bouquets by the assigned
deacon and are then delivered to various Home
Ministry members, as well as anyone on the
prayer list or in need of cheering up.
During the Christmas holidays,
individual gift bags are prepared and filled
with goodies. Our Sunday School children make
cards and pictures and assemble the gift bags,
The bags also include purchased items. These
bags are delivered by the deacons before
Christmas.

Stories
We Want to Tell: Giving Meaning to Our Advent
and Christmas Celebrations
Advent and Christmas is a time when
we remember and retell our memories and draw
meaning from the story and the telling. This
includes our Bible stories, of course, which we
retell each year and which become etched into
our memories and from which our faith journey
can be renewed and strengthened.
Adult Faith Formation invites you
to tell your story of an Advent or Christmas
memory or tradition and submit it for
publication which will be both in booklet form
and online. Please write your story and submit
it by Tuesday, October 31st. Guidelines are:
1) No
longer than 250 words; 2) submit electronically;
3) submit by October 31; 4) story is to be a
memory or a tradition of Advent or
Christmas.

Birthday
Endowment Fund
This endowment was established in
2007 and provides income to fund mission efforts
not covered by the annual mission budget. Income
has been used in previous years to send children
and sponsors to Mo-Ranch's Worship and Music
Conference, as well as for mission projects such
as water filtration systems for people in
Guatemala. Traditionally, members contribute an
amount equal to the number of years being
celebrated. So on your next birthday remember
this endowment and contribute toward making a
lasting difference in the lives of others.

Give a Meal a
Month--September Results
A big surprise was in the food tub
outside of fellowship hall! Two beautifully
decorated envelopes containing money for the
Denton Community Food Center were hiding among
the cans of food. Thank you to the young
disciples who gave their money to help the
hungry. The volunteers at DCFC say the months
before the holiday season are their times of
greatest need. In September, the congregation
and circle #1 donated $112 and 38 pounds of
food. Since January, we've given 520 pounds of
food and have donated a total of $1,105 in
monetary contributions. As of right now, we have
surpassed the entire monetary amount given in
2016 by $483. Keep up the good work everyone!
Food
Fact #1: Forty percent of the food produced in
the USA is thrown away.
Food
Fact #2: Forty-two percent of Denton County
residents live in poverty.
Food
Fact #3: DCFC purchases most of their food from
the Tarrant Area Food Bank which allows them to
multiply each dollar's buyer power by five to
ten
times.
