The Shield | St. Andrew Presbyterian Church
Pastor's Column
In 1930, Dr. Hugh Thomson Kerr, the minister at Shadyside Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, served as the moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (northern branch). As he ministered in the midst of the economic upheaval of the Great Depression, watched the instability and unrest in Europe grow, and traveled among Presbyterian churches and other places moderators go, he began to imagine a better way for our world that grew out of Christian unity. The Stewardship committee at Shadyside decided to call for a World Communion Sunday, when all Christian churches in the world would lay claim to their unity in Christ as they gathered around our Lord's Table. The first World Communion Sunday was held in 1934; in 1936, the Presbyterian Church (northern branch) adopted World Communion Sunday; in 1940, the Federal Council of Churches (now the National Council of Churches) endorsed World Communion Sunday and began to promote it worldwide. This Sunday, we continue the tradition in our worship with multiple languages spoken in worship and bread from other countries providing for our meal at the Lord's Table. Is every Christian church in the world celebrating World Communion on Sunday? No. In fact, not every Christian community in Denton County will be celebrating World Communion on Sunday. But we will - we will as a sign to the world of our need to be united in Christ and our commitment to live out our unity in Christ.

Yours in Christ,

Richard

SHOWER POWER HOUR!
Sunday, October 15
Anyone who has hosted a St. Andrew event, needed to schedule a room, submit a blurb for the bulletin, worked in the kitchen, or has needed coffee or a table at the last minute knows that the person to call is St. Andrew member Derek Shorethose. Derek has worked at St. Andrew diligently and cheerfully for seven years. Now we have a special opportunity to say a huge thank you, as Derek and Krista expect a baby girl to arrive. To celebrate and to offer them appreciation, we will hold a "Shower Power Hour" on Sunday, October 15 during the fellowship coffee in the Narthex and Parlor. We will have a place for cards, bins for gifts of diapers, wipes, etc., and a "tree" for monetary gifts. Please join us in welcoming the newest addition and letting Derek know how much his work has been appreciated!

Reformation Celebration
To celebrate the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther posting his 95 Theses, which began the Reformation, we have two week-ends of exciting opportunities for learning and worship. The Fall Festival of Faith will host Dr. John Buchanan, former moderator of the PCUSA and minister at Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago, who will reflect on where he sees signs of the church reforming today. Join him on Saturday night, October 21 for dinner and conversation, Sunday morning, October 22, during the Sunday School hour, and then for worship when he will preach. The next Sunday, October 29, we will celebrate a Kirkin' o' th' Tartans in our morning worship service. That afternoon we will gather in our sanctuary with a combined choir from our community as they present music and a special anthem written for the 500th anniversary.
Kirkin' O' Th' Tartans
Reformation Sunday, October 29
Gathering of the Clans #3
Why Do We Celebrate the Kirkin' O' Th' Tartans?
The tartan is a symbol of this love and togetherness, no matter what our heritage. In our Kirkin' service, we remember ancient times, as well as past and present kith and kin, while asking God's help and blessings in the future.
We celebrate clans and tartans because the clansmen demonstrated true brotherhood and the clan was the family. In early history, clans were simply a gathering of peoples for their protection and for economic, political and social support. They were not necessarily related by blood. Scotland in the mid-18th century saw the English parliament and monarchy (The Disarming Act, 1746 - 1782) banning weapons, as well as the wearing of tartan or kilts by Highland clansmen (effective August 1747). A latter-day legend has it that clansmen would carry small pieces of the banned tartan cloth to the Church (Kirk) and the clergymen would slip a blessing into the service. Specific tartans developed simply because each area liked to weave a certain design using local herb dyes. As a remembrance of early Scottish Presbyterianism, Kirkin' o' th' Tartan worship services have spread across America.
Save the Date!
Reformation Hymn Fest
Sunday, October 29, Sanctuary, 3:30pm
Sunday, October 29 at 3:30, the St. Andrew Chancel Choir will be joined by the choirs of Christ the Servant Lutheran Church, First Presbyterian Church, and Trinity Presbyterian Church in a program of great hymns in honor of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. The program will include favorites such as "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God," and "Now Thank We All Our God" along with readings from Martin Luther and John Calvin. Please join us for this great celebration!
Stories We Want to Tell: Giving Meaning to Our Advent and Christmas Celebrations
Advent and Christmas is a time when we remember and retell our memories and draw meaning from the story and the telling. This includes our Bible stories, of course, which we retell each year and which become etched into our memories and from which our faith journey can be renewed and strengthened.
Adult Faith Formation invites you to tell your story of an Advent or Christmas memory or tradition and submit it for publication which will be both in booklet form and online. Please write your story and submit it by Tuesday, October 31st. Guidelines are: 1) No longer than 250 words; 2) submit electronically; 3) submit by October 31; 4) story is to be a memory or a tradition of Advent or Christmas.

Good Things Happening at SAPC, thanks to God!
The Stewardship Committee of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church invites all members to participate in a meditative art craft in anticipation of our faithful giving response to God's work during the fall stewardship season. Members are encouraged to decorate cards responding to the statement, "Thanks to God working through...., this GOOD THING happened" and adding them to our 'response collages' which will be on display in the Narthex. The cards, art supplies and craft table are available for use in the Narthex before and after church service or you can take the cards home and bring them back prior to Sunday September 17. The cards are anonymous but we do ask that you voluntarily check the demographic questions on the back to assist the committee and the church in its work and mission. Your cards and artwork will be an integral part of the meditative and contemplative reflections of our church community as we focus on our goals and mission for the next year.
